So how would you describe your work in three words?

In three words? (laughs) black and white? That’s the majority of it.

Coming from a much more rural Hometown and background, do you find it easier to be inspired by London as a city?

Yeah definitely; Id think that because theres so much going on and such diversity all over the place; for me its interesting, and definitely have a love hate relationship with it, but I dunno… I’m getting used to it.

So would you ever return to your earlier, (Gregory) Crewdson-esque Images?

Yeah defiantely! That kind of of work is time consuming: looking for locations, looking for models, getting assistants… I love doing that stuff though, and definitely will return: its just a matter of finding the right project to suit it, and I still do bits and pieces like that for artists and promo work- but my flashes are under-used at the moment!

So for you, what makes black and white so prominent in your work?

So thats how I statrted taking pictures (for one thing) and all of the first photographers that I really looked at their work, they were working in black and white and all of the people that I still idolise, work in b & w. For me I like it because it takes things away from reality a little bit and you can kind of appreciate things for lighting, or composition… plus for me it means that I can take more pictures, because sometimes you might take a picture but the colour ruins the composition; a colour may draw your eyes to the wrong place and with colour, I prefer to set it up myself and have control over it all.

So what do you look for in a scene before you capture; in a typical street image?

That’s an interesting question; like, to start with when I first started doing it, Id maybe go out and try to capture one “certain thing” and have an idea of what I wanted to get before I went out but the nature of it, is that “its” all constantly changing, so I don’t think there’s one thing that you could say is the “key thing”… but for me, there’s a number of things I look for generally: depth- things going on, on different levels, Lighting and composition.

Your images are quite intimate and undeniably honest- even within many instances of busy street scenes. Are your techniques towards capturing that, something you have tried and tested over the years?

I don’t think so… that’s a hard one… I guess its just a facet of my personally that comes out- I just want to do people justice and I think the way that street photography works is that youre just taking pictures of any people and I understand from the person getting their picture taken’s point of view that its actually quite weird, and maybe a bit intimidating; I’ve had my picture taken when I haven’t wanted it to be, and it’s a bit weird (laughs) So I just want to make these people look as good as I possibly can I guess.

You’ve done a fair amount of touring work with band The Morning Parade- would you call it a career highlight? What about touring has made you want to return (touring)?

Well its just a piece of extended work; that’s the highlight because Ive spent so long on it, and its developed- and I’ve seen them develop from it too and obviously you get to travel vocariously and live like a rock star (laughs).

What countries have you covered?

We went all over Germany; Berlin, Ofenbeck, Switzerland, Holland, Spain: its been pretty good, and a crazy experience- its nice to be able to just concentrate on photography all of the time. After a 12 day trip, its like “damn”- and then I’ll go back to something else when I get back home, like my other jobs which I don’t enjoy as much, and I find that hard.

So what other Commissions have you been able to do? I know you’ve done a few exhibits …

Well I worked with Carhartt for a long time, straight after I finished university and was just covering their events to start with and eventually went on to shoot some bits and pieces for catalogues and online stuff for them. I did a little piece for Stones throw- this one guy called Mr Chop, a music producer. I do teaching stuff, and run some workshop projects for the NHS on Alcohol awareness, which went on to be exhibited; firstly in Koko, and then two schools.

So, tools of the trade.. what are you currently using?

At the moment, a Nikon D200 and shoot with one lens – a standard 30mm Sigma lens

So you love wide angles…?

I just love it because it’s the most similar to my eyesight and the way I do it is to walk around and frame things up with my mind and when I’m ready set it all up and then *snap*.

From the perspective of shooting Secure buildings in central London, have you encountered any problems from security guards etc?

Not really… I mean the one time I did have trouble was when I was teaching photography in Stratford; I went there for two years, and the Olympic stadium was being built, and I thought it would make a pretty good documentary …and basically two police officers cam up and searched 3 out of the 10 people there and then took our details; Didn’t think anything of it, but then two detectives turned up at my house the next day, to actually check that I was a teacher…! But in general, I don’t really stay in one spot enough to get moved on.

So what motto would you say your work is produced under? Robert Capa’s “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough” sprung to mind for me?

I don’t know (laughs)- I just like to work with the composition as much as I can and challenge myself and see what I can get away with sometimes, I guess- and if it makes it a better picture, then I’m up for it. I like that quote, but I’d say it’d be more Micha Bar am; “If you’re too close to events, then you lose perspective, and then it isn’t easy to be fair to the facts, so keep your oen convictions out of the picture. It is almost impossible to be both participant in the events and the observer.”

Since discovering the Illustrative work of Hattie Stewart, I’ve found it a pretty hard
job beginning to understand just from where inspiration in creating such lucid and
vibrant pieces could even stem from. Her work has proven to be a strong beacon,
amongst the often saturated and crowded realm of illustration; allowing her to gain
commissions worked with the likes of Luella, Henry Holland and Diesel. Equally as
eclectic & lovely, as talented, I caught up with her to discuss current affairs.

So; what are you currently working on?

At the moment I’m currently working on a massive collaboration with my friend Tom
Baxter; we’ve wanted to work with each other for a while as we have very different
styles: mines cartoony and very vibrant while his is very clean and serious so a mix
between the two would have a really interesting outcome. We want to try and exhibit
it soon, and maybe produce some prints and t-shirts for it so its quite exciting.
Also, I'm part of an animation collective “colour club” which is a group of awesome
animators from Kingston. We have been commissioned to do the visuals for “Kidda”
and I've been able to produce an animation with my characters and background
design. It was quite awesome to actually see my characters move!

Around what age did you “start” illustration?

Well I have always drawn (as most artists in the industry can say), but professionally.
I started when I was about 18, when I got my first commission with Luella (it was
amazing!) I’ve just been drawing ever since. It’s an important part of my life to draw;
it’s an expression of myself. Whenever I’m feeling crappy about something then
that’s my release- so I’m very fortunate to have something like that.

And your first inspirations were...?

My first inspiration was Julie Verhoven who’s an absolutely amazing and does
beautiful work- she had a really vintage style, in a modern way. Obviously I like
younger artists such as Kate Moross for her range of work, passion and what she has
been able to achieve. I also love the style of Lyndsey Gooden who does a lot of stuff
with Panther Club- I tend to really go for artists who don’t work in a style similar to
me, because they’re working in ways that I would never be able to do myself- but
would love to.

A lot of your work seems to be varied across a spectrum of both energetic
traditional illustration as well as paintings, pen use and often case multi-
medium. What would you say your favorite style to work in is?

I think its jus straight black pen to paper: I have always preferred a cartoonish,
animated style- very character based. It was always a natural progression for me to
end up doing what I’m doing now but I don’t want to end up type-casting myself
to doing one specific thing, so I try to apply my style to as many different things
as possible and hopefully you can see it go though. I think that in order to keep
progressing as an artist you have to be able to mould your illustration to work with
different briefs and industries.

I recently saw your collaboration with Designer Henry Holland, of “House of
Holland”- how did that come about...?

I heard that he liked my work and wanted to get me on board with his pre collection
and then it happened! I was very fortunate to work with someone who liked what I
did and also shared a similar playful outlook. I was so lucky to be able to get to do
that. I’m hoping to start on his new collection soon…

Would you say it was your favorite commission to date?

I would probably say House of Holland as it was great for me to be able to work with
such an awesome brand but use my own style completely. Its rare and I'm thankful for
it.

So a year on from graduating (Kingston University) how is Freelance life on a whole?

At the moment I feel its going well! Its been up and down as it would be with any
graduate, but at the end of the day, you have to constantly remain positive about what
you do and constantly work your ass off. Good things do come as well as the bad-
its just a matter of maintaining pace and never slowing down. Hell freelance isn't
eosy, I still work in a bar for a little extra money (and its fun!)! I make the best damn
cocktails.

I heard that you recently had some issues regarding Plagiarism…..?

Yeah… it was a difficult position to be in and you do have to ask yourself a lot of
questions and go through all the information before having the guts to make it a
public issue. The support I received was overwhelming, I wouldn't of put myself
or my work on the line if it wasn't for them and if I wasn't sure my work was being
taken for granted. Its over now (I hope) so I won't be naming any names. I only hope
that anyone else in the position I was in, receive the amount of support I did. On
plagiarism all I can say is don't do it! Its not worth it.

I also came across your Zine the other day: how’s that going?

Yeah they are going well- you can buy them online or at http://

On reflection, what are the best & worst aspects of illustration?

Best: Being able to participate in exhibits; like when I was invited to Miami for
the Sanrio show and got to exhibit along amazing artists like Richard Coleman and
Shepherd Fairey – or the House of Holland job!

Worst: when you send out like fifty emails and you get back….two emails and they
are rejections! Its when you’re constantly trying your hardest to keep things going but
everything is so slow, so it’s a constant push. Sometimes its easy to think why am I
doing this? “I’m not good enough” and its completely self deprecating, until you snap
out of it- if you keep knocking on the door, someone is finally going to answer.
